It was our good fortune to have heard of SieMatic and the merits of kitchen designer Susan Smart from a friend of mine at work who had experience with both. We had recently purchased a pre-war coop apartment that needed a total renovation. The kitchen had not been renovated since 1931 and still had in place a double sink, broom closet, and two huge closets that served as pantries (one with built-in space for an icebox!). There was a draw string light, ceiling beams at various different heights, and almost no counter space. In short, the kitchen was a monstrosity where space was not maximized.
After Susan Smart evaluated both our needs and what was possible with our kitchen space, there was a remarkable transformation. The double sink was replaced by a deep single sink, freeing up space for a bigger counter. In addition, Susan had the idea of sinking the refrigerator into one of the pantries, thereby allowing additional counter space. The other pantry was redesigned with optimal shelving and roll-out shelving. The ceiling height was dropped so that the varying beams of different heights were hidden. High-hat lighting was installed in the ceiling and lighting was installed just over the counhters (under the overhead cabinets) for optimal lighting while doing prep work on counters. Cabinets and drawers with inserts designed for our specific needs were filled. The final result is a gorgeous, functional kitchen with ample work space. We are so pleased - it is our favorite room of our apartment. Friends who have visited us tell us it is one of the most beautiful and functional kitchens they have ever seen.
